Because of his love of drawing from a young age, and despite also being curious about philosophy, Guillaume Mazauric initially thought he would study applied arts. He finally chose to attend Les Beaux-Arts de Nantes (ESBANM), which offered him a chance to acquire a strong base in theory as well as a prospective dimension for the research he would explore in his artistic practice. Today, his work is continually inspired by aesthetic theories on images. As a keen observer, he is also attentive to the new ways images are made and used, which can be seen in his composition choices – whether painted or drawn – where he integrates narrative elements either resulting from algorithms or inspired by literature. Whether they take the form of polyptychs, series, or even installations, his seemingly traditional works echo contemporary questions regarding images.

Guillaume Mazauric was born in Decines-Charpieu in 1987. He lives and works in Nantes, where he graduated with a fine arts degree and a Master’s in “New Technologies and Cultural Production” in 2011. Alongside his activities as a visual artist, he has worked in web development and digital publishing since completing his studies. This dual interest for traditional practices and new technology can be seen throughout his work – particularly notions of simulation, hyperreality, and the fact that our experience of the world is largely short-circuited by images. Through painting and installations, he presents his unique worldview, where representations free themselves from their duty to stick to the reality and appear threatening. His work has been exhibited in Nantes, Saint-Nazaire, Charleroi, Paris, and Tokyo. In 2018, he received the Prix des arts visuels de la ville de Nantes.
