l'arrière-cour, 2022
in collaboration with Vicente Lesser
From atop their columns, lions stare down at you. You wonder: are they there to welcome or turn you away? As you admire the arabesques of a wrought iron gate, you can’t help but realize these ornaments are also spikes. The city then suddenly becomes a space filled with blind eyes and mute mouths that nevertheless shout commands, intimidate, and implicitly dissuade. Within the environment of western cities, Jeanne Tara identifies the architectural elements that stand in for authority, class or territory. She is interested in the forms that obstruct, prevent, and hinder both bodies and minds.

Born in 1994 in Ambilly, Jeanne Tara trained in classical and contemporary dance before turning to visual arts. She studied at the Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design in Geneva between 2012 and 2015, then continued her artistic training at Brussels’ Ecole de Recherche Graphique, where she obtained a master in Artistic Practices. She has exhibited her work on many occasions, in Geneva: at Halle Nord, at the TOPIC space, or at the Centre d’Art Contemporain – but also at the Jungkunst in Winterthur, at Les Halles EAC in Porrentruy, as well as the MAC in Pérouges (Rhône-Alpes). Her work deals with the notions of borders, authority, and power over bodies in public space, namely through the prism of architecture. In her practice, she uses paint, sculpture and installation. She lives and works in Geneva.
